Field #1

First field of our hobby farm.  It turns out that 1/16th of an acre is a pretty big area when you have to dig out sumac and wahoo roots, break sod and do primary tillage...

Field #2

Someday, long after the memories and blisters from Field #1 have faded...

Fruit and Nut Orchard

We have been busily planting fruit and nut trees across much of the property.  The idea is to separate the trees enough to limit the pests, or at least make them get some exercise…

Sustainability. It's a term thrown about with reckless abandon.  In truth there is a genuine conundrum for part time farmers as it relates to growing your own food in a sustainable way.

Space to grow.  Between postage stamp sized yards and HOA restrictions, many of us could never hope to grow all our own food.

Cost for setup.  Implements, tools and related costs make recouping the expense through savings at the grocery store unrealistic for many.

Environmental Impact.  Is it reasonable to assume that a small footprint farm can offset its setup through reduction of "big-ag" consumption?  Unlikely.

What's the point?  For us, it's a matter of providing for ourselves.  Finding a balance between spend and production, and eventually reaching the point that we don't find ourselves dependent upon typical food distribution during the next crisis.
